Aramaic - the Language of Egypt

Launch Interactive Lesson

In this lesson, we look at the language that was spoken in Egypt in Bible times, and more specifically in the several centuries leading up to the time of the New Testament.

This is a particularly interesting time, because there was an interaction between several languages - Hebrew (which was a language specifically associated with the Jewish people), Greek (which many people assume was the lingua franca, or common language, spoken throughout the whole Middle East at this time), and Aramaic (which of course is the subject of this website).

A careful examination of the evidence shows clearly that Aramaic was the normal spoken language, in Egypt, all throughout this time.

In fact, as we shall see throughout many other lessons in this series, Aramaic has been the uniting language across whole empires of the Middle East for thousands of years. It has been the one constant factor in a sea of change.
