Learn Biblical Hebrew with the Israel Institute of Biblical Studies!
As well as increasing your knowledge of Aramaic, the aim of this website is to provide you with a greater understanding and appreciation of the Original Languages of the Holy Bible. We want this website to be a stepping-stone as you progress in your studies of the Scriptures, rather than an end in itself.
Since Aramaic and Hebrew are so closely related, leveraging your knowledge of Aramaic to learn Biblical Hebrew will increase your understanding of both these Scriptural languages. We have searched for high quality partners who have a proven track record in teaching Biblical Hebrew. We have found such a partner in The Israel Institute of Biblical Studies.
Depending on how you learn, for many people one of the best and most practical ways to learn Biblical Hebrew is to use the power of the Internet to take part in a virtual online class. From the comfort of your own home, at a convenient time, you can attend a virtual classroom and attend virtual classes in Biblical Hebrew with other students. You can ask questions, take notes, and interact with the teacher and other students, as if you were attending a Yeshiva in Israel.
Here is how this method works:
- Biblical Hebrew Classes are run by Israeli teachers in Israel - teachers whose mother tongue is Hebrew, who have grown up with the language all their lives, who understand the Tanakh and the culture of the Hebrew Bible, who are highly qualified teachers, and whose knowledge of Hebrew is much higher than ordinary Israelis, or even your friendly local rabbi!
- Several levels of Biblical Hebrew classes are held weekly at regular, convenient times.
- People around the world connect to the Biblical Hebrew classes from their home, via a broadband connection, using headphones and speakers.
- You see the Biblical Hebrew lessons being taught on your computer screen. You listen to the Hebrew teacher and the other students. You can ask questions. You are truly immersed in the Hebrew of the Tanakh, just as if you were attending a Yeshiva in person in Israel.
- Right from the start, you will be reading and studying passages from the Hebrew Bible. This is not a theoretical course on grammar theory, but a real-life introduction to verses from the Bible, in Hebrew.
- You will see connections between passages of the Hebrew Bible that you never imagined were even there, if you have only ever read an English translation.
- You are given a student locker with access to further Hebrew learning resources. Unlike an Ulpan (dedicated language school) or Yeshiva (religious school), you can re-play all the lessons again and again, in your own time.
The key to learning Biblical Hebrew properly is to be immersed in the Hebrew of the Bible, but immersed at the right level and pace for you. You need to understand what you are reading, to be able to ask questions, and pick up new Biblical Hebrew words and grammar steadily. You need to be in a Biblical Hebrew class with other students who are also at the same level. To do this, the Israel Institute of Biblical Studies provides five levels of Biblical Hebrew classes, from A (beginners) to E (fluent). This ensures that you can be immersed at the right level - not too easy, but not too hard. You can review previous Hebrew lessons throughout the week.
This is a truly excellent way to learn Biblical Hebrew. Whatever your background, you will be able to study Biblical Hebrew at a level, and at a pace, which is right for you.
