Now that you have learned the letters of the Aramaic Alphabet in the 'Hebrew' Ashuri script, it is now time for you to progress to the Estrangela script. The Aramaic Alphabet is exactly the same in both of these scripts, but in Estrangela the letters are written slightly differently.
These lessons on the Estrangela Alphabet build on the previous lessons on the Hebrew Ashuri script. Therefore, it is important that you don't jump straight into these lessons on Estrangela, but first work your way carefully through all the previous lessons. Unlike other categories of lessons where you can potentially pick and choose which videos to watch, you will progress better if you work your way systematically through all these lessons on the Aramaic Alphabet.
To summarize, the Hebrew Ashuri script is used in Biblical Aramaic and in the Aramaic Targums. It is also used in some editions of the Peshitta Old and New Testaments. By contrast, the Estrangela Alphabet is associated with Syriac, and is used for the Peshitta Old and New Testaments.
In this introductory lesson, we will remind you of a few facts about writing the Estrangela Alphabet, then go on to compare how the letter Alap in Estrangela compares with the same letter in the Hebrew Ashuri script.
